For years, I lived with horribly crowded and crooked teeth because I was convinced that this was one of life's "unchangables" that God had given me. My mom was violently opposed to braces because to reject the way "God had made me" was to reject the great Potter himself. Thus, I lived with terrible insecurity over my teeth for most of my teenage years. When I finally did get braces in my early twenties, my mother thought I was becoming worldly. An ATI family at church started to put distance between me and them. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions of my young adult life. But oh what needless guilt and drama I had to endure to make it happen!

Fun update: I'm on lexapro! After 10 years of serious serious and steadily worsening and lengthening lows I'm finally able to get a grip on depression and anxiety. My parents are pretty influenced by Gothard, but again i must state that we never did the whole "ati" thing and though they quote him I only once was exposed to the seminar (I couldn't take more than the first hour, and my training ended there--after all, i grew up with his axioms, who needs the friggin notebook?!)
Ma and Pa are particular about their weirdo-meds. They've gotten much worse as well. My mother too was a nurse, and is still a registered (though unpracticing for over 30 years) nurse. They're really into this whole kenesiology emotional energy muscle reading s@$% that friggin creeps me out. To boot, my brother has a thyroid problem (sp?) that's not treated with meds, but the witchdoctor kenesiologist. NOT GOOD! On the other hand, my aunts bipolar is nonexistent and the root of sin. when i told them this summer that we needed healthier boundaries, my mom started demanding "are you on medicines?! ARE YOU ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS?!"
i still haven't answered her.
