I came across a big book in my parent's library called "Character Sketches". I believe this is Volume 1. It doesn't say on the cover that it is Volume 1 because I believe it is a first edition. It was first printed in 1976 by Rand McNally and Company. The book has beautiful artwork in it and has nature leasons and Bible character stories in it. Has anybody read these books and if so can anybody comment on them? Are they Biblically accurate? Do they have false teaching? Can you get useful wisdom from them?

My family had (probably still has?) both volumes. They are well drawn and published.  They are put out by IBLP and I think the sketches were done by Bill Gothard's brother, Steve.  It's been a long time since we read them, but I think they are mostly ok. I wouldn't trust much of what they say as scientific fact, but they are interesting to read.  Simply because they are Gothard material, I would read them with a very critical mind and if anything seems to pop out at you as incorrect, you should check with the Scriptures or a science manual you might trust (as the case may be).

I think the pictures are nice...and they give some good ideas, but like IGirl said I think you need to be careful with the scientific facts.
Also I think the verses that he uses, etc, are far fetched and taken way out of context.
What's new though? Right?

Yeah, You're probably right, and he probably has his legalistic flavor weaved in throughout the book. So it is probably very biased.
Where does he get his scientific facts? Are they documented?

I have no idea where he gets the scientific facts. But then again, look at the conclusions he's come to in the medical end of his "ministry".  Cheesy

To my knowledge, Dr. Gutherie did most of the scientifical study.  He was one of the people that knew what he was talking about too.

Oh and and igirl?  There are three Character Sketches not just two. :-P

Encourager: Legalism apparently wasn't around when they wrote the character sketches. ;-)  It is mainly about how Biblical characters and different animals demonstrate certian Character Qualities.

Is it just me, or did anyone else find the artwork a little, well, like sophomoric sketches from a wanna be artist?  That's a little harsh, let me rephrase that: sometimes the proportions were a little (ahem) off.

Well, I just know that tried to "engraft' the pineapple story onto my heart, and became an atomoton, so sure of everything, that I did not have to think for myself. Everything belonged to God, so I didn't need to worry about any of it. I actually had someone tell me that thinking too much was ungodly, because we were to "lean not upon our own understanding." I was dumstruck.
